Here’s a brief introduction to our fencing club at the University of Surrey.

Our club gives everyone the chance to fence, from beginners right up to national-level fencers; here there is support and a place for all. We offer coaching in groups and 1-on-1 sessions.

If you’re new to fencing we run a beginners course to teach you the sport and once you’ve completed this initial training you’ll be fully integrated into the group for free fencing.

All of our training sessions take place at the Surrey Sports Park, twice a week. We teach and fence all three weapons (Épée, Foil and Sabre).

Beginners start with foil but after the basics can try out other weapons and find their favourite.

Experienced fencers are free to try new weapons or focus on developing their skills on their main weapons.

We are working towards developing two teams for BUCS, one in the men’s leagues and one in the women’s. This can be a great way to throw yourself into the club for any more experienced fencers! While we develop these teams, we are always looking into other competitions, as well as having Varsity in the second semester. If you’re a new fencer, once you’ve completed your training, you also can join the teams and fence alongside some of our more seasoned fencers; either way, it will be a great chance to meet other fencers, get involved in the club and build up your own ability!

Our fencing club has an active social life, and we’re always looking to do new socials with our members. Some of our regular socials include: movie nights, after-training catch-ups in the sports bar, rubix nights, and many others. We are also a part of annual university-wide events like the Colours Ball and the formal ball for all sports clubs. And, of course, we have our annual Christmas Dinner! Over COVID, we managed to do multiple online fitness sessions with the Tennis Club, an online Among Us night with the LGBT+ Society, and an escape game for our members. We also had a fundraising event where our members lunged for 12 hours straight, for a total distance of 23,75 km lunged and £900 was raised for @SurreyNightline.

In 2023-2024, our beginners excelled during Regional BUCS individual! We won:

  • Women beginner foil: 1 gold and 1 silver medal
  • Men beginner foil: 1 gold medal
  • Men beginner sabre: 1 bronze medal
  • Women beginner épée: 1 bronze medal
  • Women Novice épée: 1 silver medal

Our women’s team also won Varsity, for the 3rd consecutive year!

A fundraising event was organised for Prostate Cancer UK, with £1,000 raised! Our members and externals fenced for 12 hours straight, with fun activities and challenges.

We partnered up with the Archery and Trampolining clubs to do taster sessions, and we would like to extend the idea to other clubs and societies next year!

Every year, we organise a friendly challenge for Gradsport with our alumni! It is an excellent opportunity to fence very experienced and friendly members, but also to make new friends!

Hopefully, this has given you an insight into fencing at the University of Surrey, but if there is anything you would like to know more about, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

All for one and one for all!

The Fencing Committee.
