The Maths Society has traditionally run a variety of social events alongside the mentoring scheme. We are always looking to expand our offerings to our members and are happy to take any suggestions on board. Below are a few of the events we have run in the past or are considering running in the future.

Socials

We usually run a few bar crawls throughout the year but we’re always looking for ideas for non-alcoholic social events. So far we’ve been thinking about going bowling and/or ice skating. Let us know what you think using our team’s form. The maths department have reached out to us to say that they would like to help with socials. After a bit of discussion we came up with a few ideas, including a MathSoc ball and department hosted socials (pre-drinks with staff). We are also looking to collaborate with as many other societies as possible. If you are a committee member looking to collaborate, drop us an email at ussu.mathsoc@surrey.ac.uk.

Talks

Currently, we run a series of seminars with the maths department, that has speakers talk on a variety of subjects, for students in the Maths department. We would love to open these seminars up to all MathSoc members but we will have to negotiate with the department. We would also like to start a ‘Peer Presentation’ series. This would involve members meeting up to give short presentations about something related to maths. We would allow a lot of flexibility in the choice of topic as the main objective would be to give students experience in presenting, without the pressure of academics watching, which will be invaluable when it comes to any project work you may have later in your studies/career. If any of this interests you, feel free to drop us an email with the subject ‘Talks’.

Study Support

We don’t intend to provide any direct, hands-on, support for students as there are already other services in the University to help with this. However, we would like to organise some group study meetups to give students who don’t want to study on their own an oppurtunity to meet other like-minded students. We could run one big meetup at a set time or organise students into smaller study groups and help them arrange a time and place for them to meet. If you want to let us know your thoughts just email us with the subject ‘Study’.
