No Wave hosts a wide range of regular events for our members to enjoy. From regular socials and Open Jams, to hosting our own gigs and our Album Swaps, there’s something for every music enjoyer to participate in!

Regular Socials

An evening of drinking, conversation and getting to know each other, Regular Socials are the bread and butter of No Wave’s events. Come along to make new friends, and enjoy weekly playlists, which all members can contribute to. These nights are sometimes themed around certain decades, with specific music and costume competitions for any member who wants to partake.

When: Tuesday, 7:30pm-11pm

Open Jams

As part of our merger with Bandsoc, No Wave inherited their Open Jam sessions. Run by our two gig officers, these events are the place to be if you enjoy playing or listening to live music. Free to attend and play at, Open Jams are a fantastic way to meet other musicians at the university, and play together. No Wave owns two guitar amps, a bass amp, a drum kit and a mircophone, alongside use of the Basement’s PA system.

When: Monday, 7pm-10pm
Where: The Basement, Stag Hill Campus
How Often: Every Week
What to Bring: Performers should bring their own guitars, drum sticks and the like. Hearing protection is recommended for performers
Membership Required: Free Membership

Basement Bookings

Should you want to use the Basement and No Wave’s musical equipment to rehearse as a solo performer or band, it’s available to members with the Music Pass membership. Hours are managed by our Gig Officer, Hudson Ashmoore, though speaking to the President or Social Sec is also an option. Usage of the Basement is balanced between bands, and if multiple people will be using the space at the same time, at least half of them must have the Music Pass.

When: Wednesday and Friday, 6pm-10pm
Where: The Basement, Stag Hill Campus
How Often: Available for society use every week, though is shared across all users
What to Bring: Performers should bring their own guitars & drum sticks. Hearing protection is also recommended
Membership Required: Music Pass

Basement Nights

Managed by our Social Sec, Chris, Basement Nights are nights when No Wave takes control of the Basement, with Committee members playing their own playlists over the speakers. Come along for a night of alternative music underneath Rubix! Note that our Basement Nights are often hosted during popular events in Rubix, so tickets may sell out very quickly.

When: Specific nights while Rubix is open – keep an eye on social channels
Where: The Basement (accessed from within Rubix)
How Often: Up to 3 or 4 times a semester
What to Bring: N/A
Membership Required: No membership required, but tickets for the main even in Rubix are needed

No Wave Gigs

Having started again in 2023, No Wave is excited to continue our practice of hosting or supporting live music events in Guildford. Whether it’s co-hosting, supporting or sponsoring a gig in the area (potentially offering our members a discount), or straight up hosting our own events, No Wave Gigs are special events for our society, allowing us to not only support the local music scene, but also give No Wave bands a platform to perform.

When: Depends on the event – keep an eye on social channels

How Often: N/A
What to Bring: Hearing protection is recommended for louder gigs
Membership Required: No membership required, but tickets to the specific event are almost always needed

Album Swaps

As an alternative music society, No Wave’s members listen to a huge variety of music. Album Swaps are the perfect opportunity to broaden your taste in music, and consist of participants submitting one album. They then receive another album to listen to, and share their thoughts with other members.

When: Most often during holiday periods
Where: The No Wave discord server
How Often: 1-3 times a holiday
What to Bring: N/A
Membership Required: Access to the discord server

Where to find us

Wates House is located on Surrey University’s Stag Hill Campus, up the hill from the Library building, and very close to the Cathedral. It’s a red brick building with a metal and glass walkway.

• If you’re coming from the main entrance, follow the path until you pass the Teaching Block and PATS, and turn left up the road.

The Basement is found as part of the Student’s Union building, also on Stag Hill Campus. This building is also home to Rubix, and is next to Hillside, and the AX and AY buildings.

• For Open Jams and Basement Bookings, the Basement is accessed directly, through a door on the side of the building.
• For Basement Nights as part of Rubix events, the room can be accessed from within Rubix only, by turning right and going downstairs one you’re through the main entrance
