Course Rep Interviews

Himesh Soni - UG International Event Management

Q1.What’s one piece of feedback from students that you’ve helped turn into real change?

One feedback I got from students was during our 3-hour seminars, we weren't getting any breaks. So I went to my tutor and said if we could get short breaks in between, just for 10 or 20 minutes. That really helped as we were able to take a break, freshen up, come back and we’re ready to learn again.

Q2. How do you make sure student voices from your course are heard?

I make sure I go up to my classmates after a few lessons and say ‘hey is there anything you want to change, anything you’re quite happy with, I then take this feedback back to our tutors and speak to them, and say ‘we’ve got this feedback’ and try and make sure it’s changed, and if its working we try and keep it the same.

Q3. What 3 words would you use to tell a new student about why reps matter?

Sheeba Pathak - PG/R Management and Business

Q1.What’s one piece of feedback from students that you’ve helped turn into real change?

I’m a PGR Course Rep and I’ve only just begun. There has been a lot of feedback coming in about not having incremented payments to be on-time, so that’s something we’ve taken up with the ADD, and it's in progress in terms of reverting back, so they’re looking into this aspect

Q2. How do you make sure student voices from your course are heard?

So we are in a Whatsapp Groupchat, and that’s where most of the PGR’s engage with and converse. Unfortunately, most PGRs don’t come in in-person, so we are looking at having some away days or engagement opportunities as well, so that there is a little bit more inclusivity and belonging amongst the students

Q1. What’s one piece of feedback from students that you’ve helped turn into real change?

So last semester, I gathered feedback using Microsoft Forms, and one of the responses that I received from the students is having a centeralised data-base or a document where we can access all the assignments and the coursework easily, so I informed the Tutors of this during an SSLC meeting and this semester, we have a pdf document, where all the assignments and coursework are stored, so that it is easier for students to access

Q2. How do you make sure student voices from your course are heard?

I constantly use feedback forms which are constantly used at committee meetings, as well as sending texts and talking to people randomly about if they have an kind of issues of doubts related to modules, as well as University life, to please kindly reach out to me, and also using the feedback forms to gather the feedback and analyse them step-by-step, and inform them to the lecturers or the personal tutors, as well as trying to solve it by myself or try to guide them

Sal Fox - PG/T International Relations

Q1. What’s one piece of feedback from students that you’ve helped turn into real change?

So as a post-grad student, one thing I gave feedback on was on assessments and ensuring that if we had 2 assignments within one module, if they were due at different times that we receive feedback on the first assignment before the 2nd assignment was due.

Q2.How do you make sure student voices from your course are heard?

So this is all about talking to people maybe outside of the bubble you’re in within your course, that everyone's in the loop if you’ve got more than one course rep for example, making sure that you’ve got a group chat, so you’re all aware of the same pathways which you’ll be collecting your feedback through, swiftly through to your SSLC.

Jia Sachdeva - PG/T Banking and Finance

Q1. What’s one piece of feedback from students that you’ve helped turn into real change?

So there was one module where the students of my class and the other subjects were facing issues with, so I took up the responsibility of talking to that professor and raising that opinion in the Student and Staff Liaison Meeting, so that really helped as it was taken up by the higher authorities and that was resolved.

Q2.How do you make sure student voices from your course are heard?

I regularly gather information formally through group chats like whatsapp, then through meetings, or just informal 1-1 conversations, but otherwise, if there was something more serious, I would take this up through email and make sure it reaches higher authorities and then giving them the updates back, because it should be a 2-way conversation.

Jaden Ogunlade - UG - Adult Nursing

Q1. What’s one piece of feedback from students that you’ve helped turn into real change?

As a course-rep, one of the main feedback I was getting this year was how to support our international students better, whilst undertaking this course and going to placement. So with all the information and feedback I collated over the year, I was able to present that to leadership within our school, and that’s helped them to get additional bits of funding this year to support them whilst they’re out on placement

Q2.How do you make sure student voices from your course are heard?

Let’s not say that I’m a confrontational person, but I do like to make sure that people’s voices and people’s concerns are heard. So, I try my best to do regular feedback forms and just have random chats with the students on my course, and I’m sure a lot of the school are a bit tired of me sending long emails about feedback and this is what people are saying, but just making sure to have conversations, and relaying those conversations back to people who need to hear them.
