Hi, I'm Amber, and I will be your new VP Community for the 25/26 academic year! I just recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology at Surrey. I love arts and crafts, and channelling my inner old lady by baking, drawing and crocheting.

How would you describe your role in one sentence?

I help to bring students' suggestions and wishes for their time at Surrey to life, whether it's belonging events, ideas for club nights at Rubix or finding new opportunities to volunteer.

How did you first get involved with the Students’ Union?

I was fortunate enough to be able to get a part-time job within the Union working in the transport team, making sure our sports clubs and societies were able to get to and from their events.

What is your favourite memory from your involvement in the Students’ Union so far?

I loved helping out as a Freshers' Angel in the first weekend in my third year. I was able to spend the weekend with my friends singing, dancing and of course helping new and returning students find their accommodation for the year! It felt great being a friendly face to someone who may otherwise have been incredibly anxious.

Why did you choose to run for election as a Sabbatical Officer?

I wanted to be able to give back to the place that had made such a difference on my time as a student. Almost all of the amazing experiences I had over the 3 years involved the SU in some way. Plus I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone a little, and fortunately for me it worked out well! It gave me a new found sense of confidence in myself and my abilities.

Which part of your manifesto are you most excited to get started on?

I would love to bring back the emphasis on volunteering in the University and the wider area. It is such an important part of not only the community, but for your personal development and the professional connections you may gain.

What one tip would you give a new student joining Surrey in Freshers this year?

As overwhelming as it may seem, pushing yourself just a little out of your comfort zone can be really beneficial in the long term. This is the best time to try out new experiences and make new friends, everyone is in the same boat as you, so don't be too worried about anything so long as you are yourself!

I hope you all have as an amazing experience here as I did, and I cannot wait to get to know more of the student body! Try and enjoy the experience whilst it lasts because it goes quick!
