Meet Luana: Your new Vice-President Voice!

Your VP Voice, Luana, chats about her path to becoming a Sabbatical Officer and all the ways to get involved with the Students' Union. Luana's approach to University life was like an all-you-can-eat buffet: try a bit of everything and make the most of the available opportunities.

Hello,

My name is Luana and I will be representing you as your VP Voice for 25-26. I graduated from the University of Surrey last year with an English Literature with Creative Writing BA, and have been working as your VP Voice since August 2024.

I was an international student from Brazil, and during my time at Surrey I developed a passion for student representation and support. I delved into different opportunities that the University and Students’ Union offer; from volunteering roles like leading Disney Society as President and being a Course Rep; to paid positions like being an International Student Ambassador and Peer Supporter.

I had the most amazing experience studying at Surrey, mostly thanks to all these opportunities that the Students’ Union offers, so I want to ensure other students have the same opportunity.

How would you describe your role in one sentence?

The VP Voice is responsible for representing your academic interests by working with Course Reps; celebrating student diversity and lived experience via the Student Equality Network, and overseeing student democracy by leading campaigns like Surrey Decides and Speak Week.

How did you first get involved with the Students’ Union?

I first got involved with the Students’ Union during my second year (2021-22), when I became a Course Rep. Then I was recommended to join the Union as a part-time officer, so I put myself forward and got elected to the Voice Zone. I also got elected as Treasurer of The Stag Society and became a Wellbeing Champion for Disney Society. I guess you could say I approached university life as an all-you-can-eat buffet, and I really recommend that!

What is your favourite memory from your involvement in the Students’ Union so far?

It’s impossible to choose only one memory. Some of my best moments at university only became possible because I got involved with the Union. I met the most wonderful people and made close friends for life. I recall my first time running in Surrey Decides in February 2022 when I met Sam, Matt and Liam who later became close friends and colleagues as my first sabbatical officer team. If I could go back in time and do it all over again, I would!

Why did you choose to run for election as a Sabbatical Officer?

I’ve always had a passion for supporting others and giving voice to those who feel like they’re not being heard. My favourite song is ‘Speechless’ from the Aladdin Live Action, so that should tell you why I decided to run for VP Voice. My Union journey was progressive, from becoming a Course Rep in second year, then getting elected as a Part-Time Officer in the Voice Zone twice to stepping up my game in final year and going for a Sabbatical Role.

Which part of your manifesto are you most excited to get started on?

I look forward to developing our Student Equality Network further, working with student leaders and volunteers to host student-led projects celebrating diversity and lived experience. I am eager to organise our awareness campaigns like Black History Month and LGBTQ+ History Month, ensuring we are hosting a range of events throughout the academic year to celebrate our diverse student community.

What one tip would you give a new student joining Surrey in Freshers this year?

My main tip is to get involved! There are so many opportunities organised by the Union and the University to meet people, develop new skills, have fun and give back to the community. University life is about so much more than your course, and I really recommend taking advantage of everything Surrey has to offer.

I’m always happy to have a chat about my work and opportunities to get involved with the Union when my calendar allows. I post regular updates and silly videos on instagram, so you can follow me at @ussu_vpvoice to find out more.
