Tuesday 19 May

The Spring Reassessment Period (SAP) results are out today and we wish you the best of luck!

For some of you though, it may be a disappointment or lead to some more uncertain outcomes. If that is you, please don't face it alone, come and speak to us in the Support Zone and one of our academic advisors can help you on next steps.

What is available for you:

  • We have a drop-in service at Manor Park Social every Tuesday 12 – 3pm throughout Semester 2 but you can come speak to an advisor then if you have a query regarding their results. It is open for all but if you are a Vet, Nursing, Medical student or living at Manor Park, then this is also for you!

  • We also have our dedicated EC Quick Query service from 19th May until 5th June, for the Semester 2 Assessment Period but you can use these to also ask an advisor about your results. Bookings are 15-min slots between 10am – 12pm for those initial queries following results. You can book on here.

  • You can either email us via ussu.advice@surrey.ac.uk and we’ll get back to you on the same day or 1 – 2 working days if we are exceptionally busy. You can also complete our online form on the website here to contact us.

  • The Students’ Union can support students with understanding their results, how to make an academic appeal if possible and/or any other queries regarding their next steps for the rest of the year with any possible outcomes. If you just need to read about Academic Appeals without an appointment then you can view our dedicated page here.

  • Finally, Nightline will also be running during the results period as normal and you can call the helpline between 7pm – 7am when open, details are here. If the service is closed there is a voicemail that directs you to Samaritans and other support services.

  • There is also wider University support which you can read more on here if you need it.

  • We wish you the best of luck today either way and please do reach out if you need us!

  • IMPORTANT INFO FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE TO RE-SIT IN THE LATE SUMMER ASSESSMENT PERIOD AND WANT TO KNOW THEIR VISA STATUS:
    • We are really sorry to hear that you have recently been informed that you have failed an assessment and need to retake in the Late summer assessment period. We also understand that for many students, this will have an impact on their visa status.

We are really sorry to let you know that there is nothing that we are able to do about this situation for you, as the CAS letters are issued by the University, based on Home Office Regulations. If your visa expires in the next couple of weeks, then you must make sure you leave the UK. This does also impact your ability to apply for a PSW visa, as you must be in the UK at the point of your results and PSW application.

If you are due a retake in the LSA, then we are also sorry to tell you that it is very unlikely that the University will be able to offer you a visa that would make you eligible for the PSW as well. The reason for this is that most LSA assessments will be online exams or coursework, and you are not required to be in the UK for this, therefore no visa will be issued. In the case where you are needed on campus, the University are only likely to issue a CAS for a visitor visa, that will run out before your results and therefore not a valid student visa.

You are able to appeal your failed result but, that again, is unlikely to make you eligible for the PSW – Appeals can take several weeks to go through, so you would need to leave the UK before you get your appeal outcome. The likely outcomes from an appeal are:

      • That it could change your mark from March (meaning you don’t need to retake in the LSA) but you will not be in the UK to apply for your PSW.

      • That they void your March assessment, and allow you another retake in the LSA – but again, you would not be on a valid student visa to apply for your PSW.

If you decided not to do your retake in the LSA (for example, if you have valid extenuating circumstances that would defer your assessment to the 26/27 academic year) then again, we are sorry to let you know that the University are not likely to issue you with a valid student visa. You would be on “assessment only” which means that you do not need to return to University to retake your assessment, meaning you do not need a visa (similar to retaking in the LSA).

If you are eligible to defer your assessment to the 26/27 academic year, and choose to sit with attendance then you would be liable for tuition fees but you would be able to return to sit your teaching and learning which may offer you a valid visa. However, there is a good chance that the University will either offer you a visitors visa for the semester OR, a student visa that will run out before your results become available – meaning that you would not be in the UK at the point of your results, so you are unable to apply for the PSW. This is determined on a case-by-case basis, and if this is something you wish to explore, then you would need to reach out to the international support team via Surrey Support.
