Freshers', welcome to Surrey! Returning students, welcome back! 

Whether it’s your first Rubix night or you’ve been here long enough to know exactly where you’re going at 2:00 in the morning, we want you to have a great night and get home safely. Big events mean big crowds, busy roads and lots of people trying to leave campus at the same time. So, before you head out, take two minutes to sort your journey home.

Getting picked up?

There’s a new pick-up and drop-off arrangement for nightlife events at Surrey. During events, Senate Car Park will be the designated pick-up and drop-off point for taxis, Ubers and private vehicles. Vehicles will follow a managed one-way route through the car park to help keep things moving safely. So, when you’re ready to head home:

1. Head to Senate Car Park.
Don’t wait outside the venue or on a busy campus road.

2. Get your ride when you’re ready.
Only order your Uber/taxi or contact whoever is collecting you when you’re at, or close to, Senate Car Park.

3. Meet your driver at the designated collection point.
Make sure you’re somewhere safe and easy for them to find.

4. Follow directions from Campus Staff
They’re there to keep everyone moving safely.

5. Give yourself a little extra time.
Thousands of students leaving at once can mean things take a bit longer than usual.

Drivers may also be asked to wait in a designated area before entering the collection point. This is designed to reduce congestion and make collections quicker and safer for everyone.

Look out for your friends

A good night out includes making sure your friends get home okay. Before you head out, have a rough plan for getting home and make sure your friends know what it is. If someone isn’t feeling great or doesn’t feel safe, stick with them and get help if you need it. And remember: you can always speak to a staff member if you need help.

If you’re new to Surrey, you might not know the campus inside out yet and that’s completely fine. Before your first big night, have a look at where you need to go and make sure you know your route home. And returning students: don’t assume everything works exactly as it did last year. The new pick-up and drop-off arrangement applies during all Rubix nights, so make sure you know where to go before ordering your ride.

Welfare Watch are here for you

Look out for the pink gazebo outside Rubix! We’re working with Welfare Watch to provide a safe, friendly space to go if your night isn’t going to plan. You’ll find them outside Rubix under the pink gazebo, offering free pancakes, sweets and water. Welfare Watch is there if you’ve had too much to drink, lost your friends, can’t find your way home, or if things have simply become a bit too much and you need somewhere to sit, talk or have a cry. We want you to have fun!

Go out. Dance. Make memories. Meet people. Have a great time. But we want you to stay safe, and to make sure you do: plan your journey home, look after your mates and use Senate Car Park for collections. A little planning means a much easier journey home.
