The Kurdish Society aims to celebrate and share Kurdish culture with the wider university community. A key goal is to organise events such as Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, to showcase traditional music, dance, and food. The society also aims to bring people together—Kurdish and non-Kurdish—by creating a welcoming space for cultural exchange and friendship. Through workshops, talks, and social events, the society will teach others about Kurdish history, language, and identity. By doing so, it hopes to promote understanding, pride, and unity while preserving and highlighting the richness of Kurdish culture within the university.
The Kurdish Society should exist for students because it offers a unique opportunity to learn about and experience a rich, often underrepresented culture. For Kurdish students, despite not having a country we still acknowledge our culture and its presence, it will create a strong sense of belonging, pride, and community, helping them stay connected to their heritage while navigating campus life. For others, it’s a chance to explore new perspectives, make diverse friendships, and engage with global issues like identity, language, and resilience. The society promotes inclusion and understanding through cultural events like Newroz, language workshops, and social gatherings. It enriches campus life, fosters mutual respect, and helps build a stronger, more connected student community where everyone’s background is valued and celebrated, making every student feel they belong.
