The Surrey Paediatric Medical Society aims to provide medical students with meaningful opportunities to engage with paediatrics and child health outside of their core teaching. Our goal is to inspire interest in this diverse specialty by hosting talks and panel discussions with guest speakers, including clinicians, trainees, and researchers, to give students a clearer understanding of paediatric practice and career pathways. We intend to organise educational and networking events that highlight current challenges and developments in child health, while also sharing information about research, electives, and leadership opportunities within the field. In addition, the society will promote awareness of broader child health issues through outreach projects and collaborations with relevant organisations. Above all, we hope to build a welcoming and supportive community that brings together students from all years who share an interest in paediatrics, and to encourage them to consider the impact they can make in improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people.
The Paediatric Medical Society exists to fill a gap in opportunities for Surrey students to explore paediatrics in greater depth and to engage with the specialty earlier in their training. While paediatrics is an important area of medicine, students often have limited exposure to it during the early years of medical school. By creating a dedicated society, we aim to provide a platform where students can learn directly from professionals, discuss key issues in child health, and connect with peers who share similar interests. Our existence also reflects the need to highlight the unique challenges and rewards of paediatric practice, to inspire the next generation of doctors in this field, and to ensure students feel supported if they wish to pursue a career in child health.
