Aims
The Surrey Wilderness and Expedition Medicine Society is dedicated to exploring medicine beyond the hospital walls. We bring together students with an interest in expedition, pre-hospital, humanitarian, and remote medicine, as well as those passionate about the outdoors and adventure. Our aim is to provide: • Educational opportunities – talks, workshops, and simulations led by professionals in wilderness and expedition medicine. • Practical skills – hands-on sessions covering first aid, navigation, survival skills, and improvised care in extreme environments. • Adventure and community – outdoor activities and trips that combine teamwork, resilience, and exploration. • Career inspiration – insights into careers in pre-hospital, military, humanitarian, and expedition medicine.
Existence
Medicine in challenging environments is growing rapidly, with applications in global health, humanitarian aid, disaster response, expeditions, and even space exploration. Yet, there’s rarely time to cover this in the standard curriculum. This society exists to: • Bridge the gap between conventional teaching and the realities of medicine in resource-limited or extreme settings. • Offer unique experiences that prepare students for electives, expeditions, and future careers in diverse medical fields. • Create a community of like-minded students who share a passion for adventure, resilience, and pushing the boundaries of healthcare. • Connect Surrey students with national networks, conferences, and opportunities in wilderness and expedition medicine.
