Discover Japanese Jiu Jitsu at the University of Surrey: "Minimum effort, maximum impact".
You need to log in before you can buy a membership
We practice a modern, practical style of Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Our core principle is "Minimum Effort, Maximum Impact" – learning to effectively use your opponent's energy and movement against them, rather than relying solely on brute strength. It's an art that's accessible and empowering for everyone, regardless of size or fitness level.
Our club is incredibly welcoming and built on a foundation of passion and fun. You'll be taught by our dedicated volunteer senseis, Sam Oughton (2nd Dan) and Kieran Lawson (1st Dan), who bring a wealth of skill and experience to every session. We're proud to be a branch of The Jiu-Jitsu Foundation, connecting us to a wider national network of friendly and enthusiastic practitioners.
Beyond regular training, we're an active and social club. We participate in regional gradings and our 2 exciting national events a year, organised by the TJJF – think lots of training, friendly competition (including BUCS categories!), and great socials. We also welcome non-student members, adding to our diverse and experienced group.
Thinking about giving it a go? We'd love to have you! Your first two weeks* are completely free with no obligation to buy a membership. It's the perfect way to experience Jiu Jitsu and meet the club.
We are all approachable and keen to help you get started. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at ussu.jiujitsu@surrey.ac.uk
*This constitutes 4 sessions if all possible sessions are attended. The two weeks commence the day of sign up.
