Meet Steve the Stag

Meet Steve the Stag, the beloved mascot of  Surrey Students’ Union — a symbol of spirit, pride, and a whole lot of student mischief.

Steve’s story begins with the stag itself — a nod to Surrey’s location and heritage. The stag has long been associated with the county and features on the University’s crest, representing strength, confidence, and leadership. So when it came time for the Union to pick a mascot, it was only natural that the proud stag took centre stage.

But why Steve? The name started out as a bit of student chat — a tongue-in-cheek nod to how casually mascots are often named. Over time, though, Steve the Stag took on a life of his own. What began as a bit of fun turned into a campus icon — a walking, dancing, selfie-taking legend who shows up at events, surprises students during Freshers’ Week, and is always ready to hype up a crowd in Rubix.

From cheering on Team Surrey at Varsity to handing out hugs during exam season, Steve is more than a mascot — he’s part of the family. Whether he’s busting moves at Union events, popping up in TikToks, or just being his friendly, antlered self, Steve embodies the energy and inclusivity of Your Surrey Life.

So if you see a giant stag strutting across campus — don’t be alarmed. That’s just Steve doing his thing. Be sure to say hi (he loves a photo op).
