Sabbatical Officer Trustees
Matt Aikin - Chair
I've studied at Surrey since 2019, doing an undergraduate degree in Politics, then a masters in Sustainable Development.
Since joining Surrey I've always been highly involved in the Students' Union, from being a course rep in my undergrad and masters, a Part Time Officer in the Community Zone, to being the treasurer and then president of the Running Club. I also spent plenty of time behind the bar serving drinks as a supervisor in Rubix and Manor Park Social, and then last year I was the Vice President Community of the SU! The SU has given me a lot of opportunities so it is my pleasure to give back as well.
Kade de Gannes
Proudly repping the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. I am a recent Aerospace Engineering student here at the University of Surrey. I’ve always been passionate about creating spaces where everyone feels seen, celebrated and connected, whether it’s culture, creativity or collaboration.
Amber Dobranzski
I am a recent graduate from Surrey, studying a Bachelor of Science in Criminology, I focused my studies on researching how countries would implement new and unconventional ideas to creative the best environment for their communities, I want to bring this to my role. I loved my experience across all three years, and I want to be able to give back to the current and future community so they can love it as much (or even more) than I did. Fun should be free and accessible to all students!
Samantha Buss
I am dedicated to destigmatising mental health, improving access to services, and creating a supportive campus culture where every student feels valued and supported.
Luana Vasconcelos
I'm a Surrey graduate with an English Literature with Creative Writing BA. I'm also an international student from Brazil. I love representing students and I’m passionate about making sure that you are having the best Surrey Life!
Since I joined in 2020, I have volunteered as a Course Rep, Voice Zone Officer, Society Signatory and Wellbeing Champion. I also worked as a Head Rep, Peer Supporter and International Student Ambassador. Hopefully this shows my commitment to helping others and working in a team to improve the student experience.
Student Trustees
Christopher Chua
I joined the University as a BSc Economics student in 2023. Originally from the Philippines, I really enjoy the vibrant culture and the rural country environment that our University has to offer. I am currently going through my Placement Training Year (PTY) for my course.
Assuming the role of Student Trustee is a way for me of giving back to our student community. As someone who works part-time and is of an international background, I have gained a unique experience spending my time here at university. That also means I share everyone’s struggle going through the rising cost of living and searching for belongingness in university. I applied to join the Board as a Student Trustee because I want our Union to hear what ordinary students like me have got to say about academic and student social life.
Sal Fox - Union Chair
Hi! I’m Sal Fox, and I’m so excited to be to be serving as a Trustee for 2025-26 through my role as Union Chair. I’m originally from Portsmouth, and am currently studying MSc International Relations at Surrey, where I also represent my cohort as a Course Rep, alongside working part-time as Student Voice Assistant within the Students’ Union. I previously spent two years as a Sabbatical Officer, as Vice President, Education and Welfare for Winchester Students’ Union during which I also sat on the Trustee Board, having graduated from Winchester 2023 with an undergrad degree in Musical Theatre.
Beyond my roles in representation, I like to keep active, and have been a competitive cheerleader for several seasons and am now proudly part of the Surrey Angels Cheerleading Team. When I’m not cheering, you’ll also find me chilling in a Kayak as part of Canoe Society. I also sit on SESC as the PGR FABSS Representative, helping ensure postgraduates are heard and supported. And outside of Uni / SU life, I’m a member of Guildford Speakers, as part of the global Toastmasters community. I’m looking forward to a busy year ahead!
Elliott Sheppard
My name is Elliott, and I am a Business Management student at the University of Surrey.
I have been actively involved in the Union throughout my time here - you may have seen me (or been served by me!) at Rubix. These experiences have given me an appreciation for the vibrant student community that makes Surrey such a brilliant place.
I am excited about the opportunity to contribute further to the Union and to represent student voices in key decision-making at Surrey!

Anne Milton
As the local MP in Guildford for 14 years it was always a pleasure to spend time with students and staff at the University. In my various roles in politics, I often visited other universities round the country but Surrey students and the Students' Union always stood out as being particularly impressive. It was therefore a pleasure to be invited to join the Board as a Trustee. I gain an enormous amount from being on the Board and hope I am able to bring my past experience to help make sure that the Students' Union continues to thrive and continues serve the students in the best way possible.
Mike Hewitson
I am a senior leader with over a decade of experience in the higher education sector, specialising in democratic processes, change projects and volunteer management. I’m passionate about empowering members and enabling them to become leaders, and creating a staff culture that fosters trust and mutual respect alongside high performance.
I studied at the University of Leeds, getting involved in the comedy scene (including taking shows up to the Edinburgh Fringe) before sticking around to manage Leeds Student Radio after my graduation. I’ve been fortunate since then to work for the University of York Students’ Union (where I met my wife!) as well as Sheffield Students’ Union, where I’m currently the Voice & Advocacy Manager. My students’ union was a huge part of my University experience, and I’m keen to support Surrey SU to make lasting memories for its own members.
