Extenuating Circumstances

If something happens that makes it impossible for you to complete your assessments, your Union is here for you to talk through your options. Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) are, according to the University regulations, circumstances that make it ‘temporarily impossible’ for a student to meet a deadline, revise for or attend an exam or assessment, or participate in their programme as might be reasonably expected.

If this feels like something you might need to discuss with our Advice Team, we recommend that you read the guide provided on our website, and get in touch with our advisors or come along to a drop-in to ask any questions you might have.

Avoiding Academic Misconduct

With the increase of online exams, there has also been a 50% increase in the number of academic misconduct cases at Surrey. The exam period is the perfect time to remind you of the best approaches to maintaining the academic integrity of your assessments to ensure you’re able to perform at your best.

We've pulled together some top tips to encourage good academic practices to help you succeed, which you can read on our dedicated Academic Misconduct webpage. If you do find yourself in need of more advice on this topic, contact our Advice Team by sending an email to ussu.advice@surrey.ac.uk for more specific help.

We hope that your exam period goes smoothly and that you feel ready and prepared to do your best! Always remember that if you do need support, your Union is here for you.
