We are Surrey University Public Speaking Society. We exist to help students become more confident, clear and composed speakers in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Whether you study law or politics, want to pitch business ideas, plan to work in corporate leadership, enjoy debate, or simply want to overcome nerves in front of a room, this society is for you. Our weekly sessions combine discussion and practical speaking. Topics range from politics and current affairs to philosophy, business pitches and big questions that matter. The aim is simple. Learn to express your ideas with confidence while respecting disagreement and thinking critically. Alongside this, we run proper socials. Bar crawls, pub nights, meals out and joint events are just as important to us as the sessions themselves. We want this to feel like a community, not a classroom. We will also host invited speakers from politics, business and public life, and run a competition once each semester so members can challenge themselves in a supportive setting. If you want to sharpen your voice, meet ambitious people, and enjoy a society with real energy and character, this is your place.
The University of Surrey already has a Debating Society that helps students practise public speaking and confidence through debate and competitions. This group should exist because not everyone wants formal debate, and many students want broader, low pressure speaking practice that also applies to real life situations. That includes speaking up in seminars, interviews, leading in societies, pitching business ideas, and discussing politics, current affairs and philosophy without it always becoming a debate format. Surrey Public Speaking Society would complement what already exists by offering a more relaxed, confidence building environment with practical speaking workshops, pitch nights, and discussion based sessions, alongside the normal social side students expect from a society. It would create a community where students can improve steadily, meet ambitious people, and enjoy regular socials, while still having a clear pathway into guest speakers and a once per semester competition.
