Negotiations Officer Welcome

Hello everyone, my name’s Jess, and I am going into my second year at Surrey. I enjoy sports, music, travelling, and more, and I am currently this year’s negotiating officer for the law society.

Negotiating is an important skill to have, not only within law, but also in daily life, as we negotiate a lot more than we probably think we do. In law terms, negotiating is the most informal form of alternative dispute resolution. It is used to reach a compromise between both parties to prevent further action from being taken. Negotiating holds a lot of other important life skills such as active listening, problem-solving skills and empathy.

The law society will be holding multiple interactive workshops where you can work in teams to improve your negotiating skills together. We will also be holding an internal competition during the year where you can put your practice into play.

If you’re interested in learning how to negotiate or to improve your skills, keep an eye out for future emails. Updates will also be posted on the blog page and the Instagram competition page (@ussu.lawcompetitions). I look forward to meeting everyone throughout the year. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns at any point (jf00757@surrey.ac.uk).

Best Wishes, Jess Frith
