The Student Equality Network is a group committed to promoting equality and ensuring the Union and University are shaped by diverse student experiences. The Network is run by paid part-time student leaders who share this commitment, and organise and lead the relevant meetings, ensuring that issues/concerns are being resolved and all students feel supported and celebrated. With this in mind, we wanted to introduce our Network Leader Spotlights giving you a bit more information about the wonderful team that make up the Equality Network. Each post will provide you with a personal insight into the Network Leaders, their experiences and ideas and why they have chosen to be part of the Student Equality Network.Â
For our second Student Leader Spotlights, we talk to Aleeza Nadeem- our Race Equality Subnetwork Leader.
Hello everyone, I am Aleeza Nadeem, and I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Data Science. As someone who has always been passionate about diversity, inclusion, and equality, I’m honoured to be a Race Equality Subnetwork Leader.
Growing up in Asia, I was always aware of how culture, race, and identity shape the way people experience the world. When I moved to the UK for my studies, I quickly realised that the challenges around race, belonging, and equality are deeply rooted in the specific contexts we find ourselves in. While this new environment has brought me great opportunities, it has also highlighted the importance of creating spaces where people from all backgrounds feel truly seen and heard.
I chose to become involved with the Race Equality Subnetwork because I believe that everyone, regardless of their race, should have the opportunity to feel a sense of belonging. For me, this role is a chance to stand up for inclusivity, amplify voices that are often marginalised, and foster meaningful conversations about race equality. I’ve seen first hand how important it is to create supportive environments where people from different backgrounds can come together, learn from each other, and work towards solutions that benefit all.
As a leader in this space, my goal is to help make sure that every student, particularly those who may be underrepresented, feels empowered to share their experiences and contribute to a broader, more inclusive campus community. The Race Equality Subnetwork is a platform where students can come together to address the challenges we face and find ways to create positive change. I truly believe that when students come together, we can create a powerful, unified force for change. It’s a space where your voice truly matters — and where your story, no matter where you come from, can be the catalyst for action.
Why Should Students Join Your Subnetwork: The answer is simple: because your voice matters. As students, we all have a role to play in making the university a better place for everyone. Whether it’s contributing to conversations, advocating for policy changes, or simply supporting those who need it, each of us has something valuable to offer. By joining the Race Equality Subnetwork, you are becoming part of a collective effort to create a more inclusive environment, not just for yourself, but for everyone. Each voice we add makes us stronger, and together, we can push for real, lasting change that impacts not only our university but also society at large. I encourage you all to get involved. Share your thoughts, your ideas, and your stories. Let’s work together to make our campus a place where every voice is valued, and where race equality is more than just a conversation — it becomes a reality.
I encourage you all to join the Subnetwork, share your experiences, and help us build a more inclusive, equitable university for everyone. Together, we can make a difference. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to collaborating with you all!
