A statement from Union President, Liam White about the rise in UK tuition fees:

‘This week, the government announced that the maximum cap for domestic tuition fees would increase from £9250 to £9535 per year. Whilst we acknowledge the strain Universities like Surrey faced with the previously frozen tuition fees, students are now being asked to absorb more financial burden to access higher education. The increase to maintenance loans fails to acknowledge the reality of the cost of living crisis, doing little to help students find housing and fund living expenses in an increasingly unaffordable economy.

As your Students’ Union, we continue to advocate for students to receive further financial support. Next month we will be meeting with our local MP, Zöe Franklin, to lobby for our inclusion under the London weighting maintenance loan scheme as well as for greater consideration of students in Guildford’s long-term housing strategy. We will also continue to make your student experience affordable through initiatives like our Community Hub and Belonging Events.
