Support for Students with ADHD
What is ADHD?
ADHD is characterised by difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
Challenges you may face:
Focus: Maintaining attention during lectures, tutorials, or independent study can be difficult.
Organisation: Keeping track of assignments, deadlines, and materials can be a challenge. Dates might slip your mind and organising thoughts may not come easily.
Time Management: Estimating time accurately and sticking to schedules can be tricky. Procrastination often leads to last minute cramming sessions and stress.
Motivation: Starting tasks and staying motivated can be a struggle. Boredom and frustration can drain your drive, especially for less interesting tasks.
Why Traditional Study Tips May Not Work:
Standard study methods often emphasise rigid timetables, linear organisation, and rote memorisation. These approaches may not align with the dynamic and adaptable nature of an ADHD mind.
Strengths:
Hyperfocus: When truly interested in a subject, you can achieve laser-like focus and dive deep into a material.
Creativity: Your ability to think outside of the box can lead to innovative solutions and unique approaches to learning.
Problem-Solving: You may excel at quick thinking and finding creative solutions to complex situations and/or problems.
Support available:
Disability and Neuroinclusion: The D&N service on campus can help you make reasonable exam adjustments, provide you with a study-skills mentor and help you access the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).
